I had no idea what to expect when I heard about this CD. An album inspired
by "Star Trek"? Seems a little odd, but at the same time, slightly
intriguing. So on my way across town to do an interview I decided to throw
the hour-long album in my car and give it a spin as I went down the Whitemud.
Not sure as to what I should expect, I chucked a bit as the first sounds through
my speakers was "Hello, this is your captain speaking" before heading
off into a musical interlude; and for the remainder of the trip, I was continually
surprised by the sound clips, ambient space rock, and just how comforting a
CD it was to play while driving.
The twenty-three track disc is an instrumental album at its core, with ambient,
experimental, space rock leading the way. It's a collection of sounds you would
hear on a spaceship, clicks and sirens, robotic noises and the like; and threaded
throughout were sound clips from Star Trek. It's a trekkie's wet dream, and
is still oddly entertaining for people who have never be able to sit through
an episode of Shatner's wonderful acting powers. Musically, it is complete
and well thought out, perfectly mixed and blended with the repeated sound bites
and sound effects. At times, you actually forget where you are and are magically
transported to another dimension.
Stardate Unknown is simple in concept, ambient space rock by trekkies
for trekkies with a steady flow and a sound that doesn't seem close to an hour
long. It's done well enough for the most cynical bastard to enjoy, but at the
same time, I don't see me going out of my way to listen to The Vulcan
Freedom Fighters. It's entertaining, a perfect disc to play while
driving but still not a disc worth multiple repeats; unless, of course, you're
either a outspoken trekkie or closet trekkie.
