Deaf Lingo have signed to Lövely Records for the release of their second full length album. The Italian based group combines melodic punk, lo-fi garage and bittersweet indie into their very own blend of alternative rock. Founded in 2015, in the outskirts of Milan, the band has developed a sound that’s direct, zestful, and warm while communicating a sense of underlying, unfiltered downheartedness, embodying themes such as alienation, separation, and apathy with a lively and energetic approach.
Deaf Lingo’s first effort, the lo-fi punk recording, the Split Pee EP, was taped in the basement of a pizza place and followed by frequent gigs in the band’s home country. In 2017 the band released their debut album BUG, which introduced the band to a new audience and enabled them to tour France and Belgium. 2019 saw the release of Deaf Lingo’s second EP, Friends/Failures, and in 2020 the band teamed up with Double Not for the release of the Killed By Boredom split.
Now, the band have joined Swedish label Lövely Records, who’ll release Deaf Lingo’s second album, Lingonberry, in the spring of 2022. The first single from the album was called Sleeping and is available on all streaming platforms. The single perfectly captures dynamic sense of Deaf Lingo, moving from bittersweet and longing indie punk to heavier, more straight forward rock breakdowns.
What are the most important features that identify your sound? What makes a Deaf Lingo song a good Deaf Lingo song?
If a song is going to be a Deaf Lingo song we can tell right away in the very first stage of composition, which is usually on a couch recorded with a phone. Then we move it to our jam space and there is a 90% chance that it will become an actual song. Our sound is very simple. We do most of the work during practice, so we always hit the recording studio with very clear ideas.
Sleeping seems to be a good mix of punk rock, alternative rock and grunge. What can you tell us about this song? What’s the story behind the lyrics?
Sleeping came about as a mix of ideas from all Deaf Lingo members. I remember it took us a long time to compose it. The lyrics are about unconditional love in a relationship. No matter what happens, toxic habits or bad things. There will always be a complicity, even if that would end in self-destruction.
What’s your experience as an Italian band? Is it hard to get a following outside of your country? You sing in English and you have Swedish record label now. What does it mean in terms of visibility for an Italian band?
Playing shows in this historic moment is very hard. In our country it is now actually impossibile. We are confident that the situation will change in the upcoming months and we hope to bring our music soon on stage, in Italy and abroad. Working with Lovely Records gives us the opportunity to get more people to know our music. They are doing a great job and they are helping us a lot with the promotion of the singles.
What can you tell us about your upcoming album? What can we expect?
Working on the new record has been the best thing we’ve done in the last 2 years, we really got out of our comfort zone. We hope this record reaches a lot of people. If you are into this kind of stuff you should give it a listen.
Is there any place you would like to tour as a band?
We never played in UK and Northern Europe! We hope to hit those places someday.
What’s good and what’s bad about punk music nowadays? Do you think the genre is in good shape or it’s a bit static?
I think that evolving is fundamental to avoid rusting. All the previous punk rock waves were lead by bands that have stepped out of their comfort zone and created something cool, then all the others joined in taking inspiration. I think punk rock it’s a bit static nowadays. It’s been far too long since something new and cool has been released. Most of the bands we know keep playing the same thing over and over again. Thanks god it’s not always like that, and it happens sometimes to discover a new cool band.
Feel free to add anything you want for our readers! Thanks for the interview!
