Our punked up pumped up performance poet, who has been described as the The Punk Pam Ayers and The Cockney Cooper Clarke, has returned with her latest exclusive poem for The Punk Site, Married To The Mod. Cherry B straddles the Shakespeare themes of comedy and tragedy, teasing with laughter, then taunting those undesirables in society. One half of the unique Cherry & Peesh, who have embellished the punk ‘n folk scene with melodical tales and catchy tunes for the past five years. Cherry & Peesh will be appearing at festivals, including 0161, Rebellion, Alternative Aycliffe and Equinox, the duo are also planning to release an album. Author, writer, poet, psychotherapist, professional swearer, dyspraxic and opinionated, words that define and illuminate qualities that feature within the personality of Cherry B.
Married to the mod, I was married to the mod
Suit by Mr Ben, hair like rod.
Yes I was married to the mod,
It was a flamboyant wedding
I knew that day, the direction it was heading
Peacock suit the groom he wore,
Spent two grand, could have been more
For his wardrobe was twice the size of mine
Shades of two tone and claret wine.
Don’t touch the cloth moth,
Tailor makes a killing
Extravagant dressing,
But can’t afford the billing
Shirts and suits and sweaters and shoes
Labels and designs, rhythm and blues.
Married to the mod, I was married to the mod
Suit by Mr Ben, hair like rod.
Used to go on holiday. Brighton by the sea
Cases piled on back of scooter,
No room left for me.
I was just an accessory,
Had to colour match our clothes,
Quadrophonia lifestyle,
Up the alley he always goes
Each mirrored wing was angled,
To reflect his vain attire
No dirt, no dust no miles on the clock,
Arrived in a van on hire.
Married to the mod, I was married to the mod
Suit by Mr Ben, hair like rod.
He was a DJ, a status most befit,
Only plays vinyl never any shit
Each record like a baby, object of desire, shame he never lit my fire
Found his calling, found his fame,
Funny how his friends all do the same.
Scooters, records, clothes,
Stereotypes that everyone knows
Sense of entitlement, looks down on others, hypocrite with a string of lovers
Yes I was married to the mod,
Married to the mod
Suit by mr Ben hair like rod
It was a romance based in a cess pit cellar
He thought he looked like Paul fucking Weller.
“I aired it for the first time last week supporting Steve Ignorant in Brighton and it went down very well. Myself and Peesh have already turned it into a song, you can hear us performing it on our Facebook livestream on 29th April. Our next Poetry is the New Rock n Roll is on Sunday 24th at 9pm on Totally Wired Radio, it features an interview with Steve Drewett from Newtown Neurotics and a very special personal message from the one and only JCC.”
Cherry B‘s collection of poetry and lyrics, Job Lot Of Rhymes, is now available via Flapjack Press. Job Lot Of Rhymes spans three decades of Cherry B’s performance work. Political, societal and inclusive, it is uncompromising and passionate punk ’n roll poetics firing from the belly of social conscience. Cherry B also appears on her monthly radio show on Totally Wired Radio, Poetry Is The New Rock ’N Roll, that offers an hour of lyric led, spoken versed, genre smashing, musical adventure into the exploration of hidden poetry, that is often camouflaged behind powerful rhythms and riffs. Named after one of their own songs, Cherry & Peesh will travel through the decades and diverse styles to discuss and dissect the meaning of rhyme as reflected by songwriters. Cherry B’s upcoming gigs include appearances with Cherry & Peesh at Manchester’s 0161 Festival on 30th April and Morecambe’s Nice n Sleazy Festival on 4th June, she will also be playing a solo gig in Ramsgate on 28th May as part of 2Drunk Punk at the Elephant & Castle.
