Moronic Pleasures: The Lost Album - Hound Gawd! Records
Hound Gawd! Records have finally released Moronic Pleasures, the fabled lost album by incendiary garage punk act The Candy Snatchers that was originally recorded in 1997, the nineteen tracks that populate Moronic Pleasures were originally laid down in extended live takes until they ran out of tape. The sessions were somewhat bafflingly rejected and The Candy Snatchers went back to New York and re-recorded some of the songs for what what would become their sophomore album, Human Zoo, the Moronic Pleasures tapes then lay forgotten for two decades before being resurrected by long term friend of the band Jake Starr over two decades later.
From the off it’s clear that The Candy Snatchers hark back to the chaos of punk’s origins, Moronic Pleasures has a break neck live feel that encompasses most of the fledgling American punk scene, elements of the early incarnations of The Misfits, Ramones, Dead Boys and Dwarves lie in The Candy Snatchers DNA along with the raw energy of the proto punk outfits such as The MC5, New York Dolls and The Stooges. It might sound like this is an album embedded in the past but this two decade old lost recording has parallels with the current crop of garage rock outfits such as Nosebleed and The Blue Carpet Band, which indicates that The Candy Snatchers were either twenty years too late or twenty years too early.
Anyone who is a collector of forgotten recordings will know that when they do eventually resurface it is hard to put a veneer of polish on them, despite the loving resurrection, production and remaster by Dan-O Deckelman, Jake Starr and Dennis Kane this still sounds raw, primitive and urgent. Moronic Pleasures is by no means a perfect album, but it is a snapshot of a band in their chaotic prime, if you love the chaos of early US punk bands or the wilder side of the original or current garage punk scenes then you’ll be glad that Moronic Pleasures was unearthed and unleashed.
