Sous La Peau - Declared Goods
Versari are a French trio who have been around since the early 2000’s and have previously released two other full lengths, although this has now been presented as a deep look into where they might be going and they have taken a chance on where they may also end up on this journey.
Seven tracks fill what feels like an almost experimental album, will it get under your skin as the title suggests is a matter of mood when listening. With songs like ‘Reviens’ (Come Back), ‘La Peur Au Ventre’ (Fear in the belly) and ‘Brule’ (Burns) you are aware that this is lyrically filled with a sense of loss and hurt.
Delving into the world of Versari and this latest reincarnation, you can only be struck with the pure use of diffusing guitar licks that swirl and weave their way through the beating heart of the album, which is encompassed by a bass and rhythm section which gives intensity of emotion to the sound, all this wonderfully sits along side Jean-Charles Verari’s vocal.
Listening to this piece of very intricately put together music, your mind goes back in places to the early Joy Division, slams into the power of Killing Joke then delves deep into a Nick Cave esk world of lyrical deliverance, all are intertwined with pure Versari. The way you listen to this album is totally defined by your mood at the time of playing, you can be left feeling down and despondent, you could feel you have had a void in your musical world filled or you could be feeling both at the same time.
An album of many facets, not something that needs picking apart, it is what it is, and it solely relies on what the listener feels at the time of playing.
