Cherym

Hey Tori - Alcopop! Records

A pop punk trio from Derry Northern Ireland, that’s Cherym, with the release of this latest EP via Alcopop! Records are set to knock down walls that should never be there, ‘Hey Tori’ is five tracks of doing things your way, singing about your life and not trying to be something your not.

Musically this EP is something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, on the surface its feels smothered in sugar candy, but bite into this and your rewarded with a crunchy centre that explodes on your tongue, a depth of sound that belies the initial feel when hitting play on the first track ‘Listening To My Head’ which vocally sits firmly in the bubblegum pop camp, a song that pays homage to the Netflix series Dirty John which I have to admit I have not seen, so hard to comment on that.

‘Kisses On My Cards’ is on the other hand where things get interesting, the vocal has still got an American feel, but we are now much more aware of the feeling that hides behind the twang, an angst that is being held back a little, the subject of bisexuality in an anthem that musically is an eye opener for us to what this band are so capable of, licks that soar, an energy that is so infectious!

There is a definite (well almost definite, if there is such a thing) theme going on in Cherym’s songs, that being the empowerment they exude, its refreshing to know that this is still able to flourish, reminds me of one of the most exciting bands around at the moment GGAlan Partridge, although a lot more experimental the ethos is the same, ‘We’re Just Friends’ being a song that deserves all the love I can give, a powerhouse of emotion, a woman-loving-woman celebration.  Carrying on in an emotional way ‘Gone Girl’ has a story of abuse to tell, the scars that will never heal, throw in a crescendo of sound, its hard not feel drawn in and spat out by the end.

The moral of this EP, is don’t judge a book by its cover, both in musical terms and in life terms.  Five tracks that are over far too quickly, here’s to the next instalment!
