A Camera Wanders All Night - Ramber Records
Document have been described by other media outlets, as Modern Post-Punk with atmospheric dark undertones.
Personally the whole idea of Post-Punk as a genre has never worked in the grand scheme of things, the inherent problem with this is, that you open the door to any multitude of flotsam and jetsam in the music world, to attach themselves to the whole we want to be part of something that actually we are not, or at worst, you even get commercially driven corporate bands using the tag as a way in the door.
So, let’s start again.
Document are releasing their 5 track “A Camera Wanders All Night” EP on May 8th.
The five piece Manchester based band have taken their brand of heavy, melancholy, character driven, Modern day Punk sound and thrashed out some pretty heady music in the studio, and the result is pretty impressive.
“The Spy Who Came In From The Cold” kicks us off, with its twists and turns of plots and counter plots in sound as well as lyrical content, defiantly creates a world that transports the listener into a time when sinister forces were at work. Angry fight or flight vocal with scratchy gnarly Guitar and thumping Drum fills are all pushed along by a Bass onslaught that simply drop in at the right moments.
In contrast to this is “Pity” much more of a fast and furious piece of snarling guitar driven punk, with no real political agenda, more of a social observation of monotony, pity for self even. A shade under 2 mins 30 secs of full on thrash, played with perfect precision.
“The World Until Yesterday” is a piece of history repeating itself lyrically, youth being at a moment of unrest over their future, “American Heat” hits on injustices that are the core of an self respecting, conscientious human, and then there is “Uncle Sams Daughter” not really to sure on this one, but musically they all have a moment in time that extends the road far into the future for punk and all of its offshoots.
Definitely not commercial, certainly not for the masses, but written and played from the depths of reality! Youth still has a voice and they will speak!
