I Might Drink Myself To Death - Self Released

Leicester DIY gruff punk quintet Our Souls self deprecatingly describe themselves as “a motley crew of spare parts from other bands that no one has heard of, less cared about”. It’s hard to judge this as they haven’t mentioned which bands they are formed from the ashes of, but I doubt this is the case based on their debut self released and self produced EP, I Might Drink Myself To Death, which is now available as a name your price download via their Bandcamp.

The opening chords of 45 kick the EP into the life, the songt initially sounds like it’s going to break out into pop punk, however within a few seconds it swiftly transforms into some raucous gruff punk rock, albeit with a slight pop punk sensibility that keeps things bouncing along nicely. This Is In G, This Is For The Hustlas keeps the momentum going and you think you know what’s coming, but Our Souls shift gears mid way as the furious Another Five Days veers into hardcore territory, to underline this the short sharp sub one minute blast of Gundrug keeps the intensity building. Finally the EP’s eponymous track brings things to a close with a finale where old school punk rock meets Fat Wreck Chords inspired gruff punk head on.

Whatever the merits of their former incarnations their passing has resulted in Our Souls releasing a fine debut EP that manages to blur the boundaries and the result is that they deliver five shots that are distilled and blended from across the punk rock world. I’d recommend the I Might Drink Myself To Death EP even if wasn’t available as a name your price download, but as that is the case you really do have nothing to lose by downloading this fine five track EP.

You can also catch Our Souls live as they will be appearing with The Kimberly Steaks and Don Blake at Nottingham’s Old Salutation Inn on the 24th March, they will also be playing on June 26th at Leicester’s Soundhouse with Ogikubo Station, with further tour dates to be confirmed.
