EP Review: Time For Action – United In the City

Formed as recently as 2017, Time For Action fronted by Warren ‘Dermo’ Dermody who’s last venture, the more indie pop Northside although may seem a world away, in reality the foundations are still punk in stature, joined by Guitarist and fellow song writer Simon Burton, then came their bass man Neil Pleasant and Drummer Keith Pleasant.

This 4 track EP out now “United In The City” comes hot on the heels of the bands debut album “Turn It Up” in 2018 and a place at the biggest Punk Festival in the world “Rebellion” in 2019 (they were on my list of bands to see, but sadly were casualties of a very heavy schedule and probably too much alcohol).

Reading the list of this bands influences, it’s very hard as a punk that grew up and was influenced too by the likes of The Buzzcocks, The Damned, Slaughter and the Dogs and then moving forward a bit, the greatness of Fugazi and Prodigy adding to the mix, then Time For Action immediately strikes a chord before one has even been played.

So the EP then, after the release of a debut album, it’s always a worry that the follow up doesn’t come or is an anticlimax, the good news is that it’s here and it’s all that you would hope for.   

“United In The City” is a song that holds all the punk ethos of self thought, awareness to all that is wrong with how the few try to control how we think, yes we are all the same and being united in the goal of equality is achievable if we stand together, “no more barriers, no more wars”, a song with all the Sham 69 attitude, but wholly of their own soundscape.

“Turn It Up” which seems to be a simple ode to a world that needs to think about the planet and not self interest so much, then “You’ll Never Be My Everything” punk played at fast pace, with energy that takes you back to the early days, of angst ridden youths crammed into a DIY venues anywhere in the world.

Followed by “Teflon Tigers” which is a whole different beast to the previous three songs, definitely a look back over the shoulder at the members old stomping ground musically, but without dropping an anchor to hold them back, Manc-indie with a snarling punk at it’s helm!

If you take the past, mash it up with the here and now, to create the future.  Then Time For Action have done it!
