Character Actors Release “Everywhere Is Good Except For Where We Are” EP
Leeds, UK's Character Actors have today released the Everywhere Is Good Except For Where We Are EP that is available…
Rules For Making Up Words - Paper + Plastick / Creep
“We’re staring down the barrel of the rest of our lives and there’s only one thing to do, let’s get old!”, shouts Joel Tannenbaum on the closing track of Ex Friends’ debut, full length record “Rules For Making Up Words”. Joel, along with the rest of us may be getting older, but there’s nothing “old” about the music on this new release.
Ex Friends rose from the ashes of Plow United (who have recently gotten back together) with Joel Tannenbaum taking center stage. Tannenbaum is joined by bassist/vocalist Audrey Crash, guitarist Jayme Guokas and drummer JP Flexner on this passionate collection of quick hitting punk rock songs.
Rules For Making Up Words isn’t as aggressive or grimy as Joel’s earlier work with the aforementioned Plow United but it’s more mature and certainly packs its own kind of punch. It’s a punk rock combination platter filled with Rancid meets the Fastbacks, a side of The Pixies and even some hints of Pavement from the Plow days. It’s addictive without getting boring and makes you want to break out your old punk records, throw on some headphones and sing a long, anthem style.
This release has a bit of everything packed into its 14 song, 25 minute romp. Gruff vocals, harmonies, ferocious and bouncy bass playing (Western Civilization), playful lyrics and dark themes alike. Some highlights include the first track, Dirty Ben Franklin, the Pixies – esque Bad Bourgeoisie, the light hearted Fight Like A Girl and the previously discussed Western Civilization.
If you’re a fan of Plow United I’m quite certain I’m preaching to the choir when I say you need to own these songs. Don’t be taken aback by the somewhat slick production on this album (the only downside I can come up with) because the songs do stand up on their own. Plow had a dirty, sludgy sound that isn’t as prevalent here. If you’re new to Tannenbaum’s music but like your punk rock served with heart and grit (and if you like any of the other bands mentioned in this piece) you need to own these songs as well.
