Halloween Single Review: The Two Tens – Looney Bin

Following on from the recent release of their stunning sophomore album, On Repeat, The Two Tens have now followed this up with the release of their spooky new single, Looney Bin. The single was released via Man Della Records on October 27th, just in time for Halloween, and it features the all new title track, Looney Bin, and on the flip side there’s a Screamin’ Lord Remix of Mean Spirit, the original version of which appeared on their sophomore album.

Looney Bin leans towards the punkier side of The Two Tens style, it carries the spirit of the Ramones along with their own ragged garage energy to produce a perfect single. The Screamin’ Lord Remix of Mean Spirit is awash with Halloween sound effects, doors creak and ghosts and zombies moan in the background, all with a decidedly b-movie set of sound effects that compliment the track perfectly, and I find myself actually preferring the spooky remix to the original version that appeared on On Repeat. Looney Bin is another release from The Two Tens that borders on perfection, the brand new title track and the seasonal remix of Mean Spirits are the perfect release for this creepiest time of year.

Seasonal releases can be hit or miss, the urge to cover an overly familiar standard or pressure to try write something that fits into the time of year has resulted in many a substandard Halloween single over the years, but The Two Tens have hit the nail on the head, or hammered it into the coffin if we’re looking for Halloween metaphors, with Looney Bin. This is a single that sits happily alongside their back catalogue, and will also be a perfect addition to your Halloween playlist.
