Lucky 7 – Self Titled

There is definitely no luck involved in this album, just pure skill. Once again, San Diego was the birth place of another up and coming pop-punk band. Lucky 7 have made a major impact in the music industry already, especially the internet community. Only  a measly four hours of time passed before California Girl was the number 1 song on the Alternative and Punk charts at MP3.com, with Come Monday close behind at number 3. Their first year on the aforementioned site, the songs had been downloaded over 3 million times, and 1 million times every year since. They were also named one of the Top 5 Internet Bands in 2001 by Yahoo Internet Life, so you can more then guess that this band will go far!!

Lucky 7’s Self-Titled CD is full of 15 catchy pop-punk songs. Although all having a small amount of lyrics in each song, they are all full of catchy tunes, and catchy lyrics at the same time. They open the album with Where Are You? It starts off with a rising riff, the same way a lot of CDs are starting lately, but I cant seem to remember any like that exactly at the moment. Then they go into the song at full stride. My favorite verse is the last one, they slow down the beat, and change the entire tone of the song for that one verse, then they go back up to the chorus. I believe that this is an effective way to open up the album.

Come Monday is the second song, and also probably one of my favorites. Its just a catchy pop-punk tune, about a guy who made a stupid mistake, and hope that everything gets better on Monday, the new day, new week. I really like the song, and can fully understand why it was so popular on mp3.com! Falling Asleep  is a slightly fast song, and a fun beat. It makes you jump up and down, kind of the opposite of the title. Its a great song, which you should check out.

Another one of my favorites on the album is right before California Girl and it is  My Father’s Son (song 7).  This one starts off with an incredible drum beat, and has powerful lyrics throughout. About a son who was neglected by his father, but still obtained some of his attributes. California Girl is a lot happier song. It has a great beat, full of some cool riffs here and there in the song, and the tune during the chorus is incredible. Some bands attempt to change the tune in the middle of songs, and it wrecks it, but in this case, they alternate the tune several time, and all the time keeping a well respectable song. Skipping Gray Summer Day and heading straight into Crash And Burn. This is my absolute favorite song on the entire album. It is a slower song, about the troubles in life. The song is slightly hard to explain, I’m just at a loss of words for it. I just love it so much. Then going to the eleventh song, Runaway, I am still impressed by the musical talent of this quartet. This is my second favorite song, which demonstrates once again Lucky 7’s ability to change the beat and paced of the song on the fly in a incredibly effective way.

2000 Miles is yet another good song by the band. It starts of slightly slower, but speeds up gradually. With catchy vocals overtop the amazing beat. Around 1:30 in, they try a type of singing, which I have never heard before. Overall, I was generally mipressed by this song. They end the album with Last Winter. The song once again is full of changes in the beat department. It was a good choice of song to cap off this great album.

Now I am not sure if Ill be able to come back to this album in a year from now and still absolutely love it, but I will be able to do that for a couple months from now.  I definitely recommend this album for anyone who is a fan of pop-punk (ex: New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Blink182, Bowling For Soup, Good Charlotte etc.).
