Love Their Country - Fat Wreck Chords
By now, everyone knows who Me First And The Gimme Gimmes are. With half a dozen releases under their belt, they have undoubtedly become the staple punk rock cover band. Featuring members ofLagwagon, NOFX, Foo Fighters and Swingin’ Utters, the band is basically a who’s who of the underground punk community. So on Love Their Country, the who’s who of the punk community has taken the time to cover songs from the who’s who of the country world, kicking up with a little spunk and energy.
The album sees the band do cover songs of Garth Brooks, The Eagles, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton among others. They take popular country tunes and kick them up a gear, injecting them with the classic Fat Wreck sound. Steady drumming with distorted NOFX guitar lines and the rough, nasally vocals of Spike Lawson leading the pack (although Joey Cape does take the lead on John Denver‘s Annie Song).
Love Their Country is a solid output, particularly for all cover songs (but what would expect from The Gimme Gimmes anyway?) The album is much more complete than their previous efforts. Ruin Johnny’s Bar Mitzvah was hindered by the comical, but unnecessary banter while Take A Break was basically just a one-song runaway with I Believe I Can Fly. Love Their Country on the other hand features a selection of songs that all standout in their own respective rights. Instead of just the solitary memorable track, Love Their Country has a handful; including The Dixie Chicks‘ Goodbye Earl and Johnny Cash‘s Sunday Morning Coming Down. The biggest downside of the album is its length – the whole twelve track album clocks in at just over twenty minutes which is a bit short for a full-length.
Really, it’s Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, that’s all there is to it. Some of today’s top punk artists coming together to have some fun and do some cover tracks, rejuvenating some classic country tunes. If you liked them before, you’ll like this; if you didn’t, then you won’t.
