Take A Break - Fat Wreck Chords
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, the most well known punk rock cover band around today is constructed of five influential musicians of today’s punk-rock scene. Fat Mike of NOFX on bass, Spike of the Swingin’ Utters add his vocals to the mix, Dave from Lagwagon on drums, Jackson plays guitar for both MFATGG and the Foo Fighters and finally rounding the group off is Joey Cape of Lagwagon and Bad Astronaut on guitar. With a line up like that, your in for a treat. “Take A Break”, the fourth full length from the band, covers some of R&B greatest hits by artists the like of Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly and Whitney Houston.
Opening the album is the cover of Whitney Houston’s classic, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go“. They do a perfect job at this and really gets you pumped up and energized for the rest of the album. Unfortunately, it seems to go downhill for a couple songs before they pick it back up with “Ain’t No Sunshine“. That seems to be the format for this 13 track CD: One or two energizing punk rock cover songs followed by one or two tracks which are not as good as they could be. The major exception to this structure is found in the middle tracks. The four songs, starting from “Isn’t She Lovely” (track 7) all the way to “I’ll Be There” (track 10), are all spectacular. Really gets you tapping your foot and singing along. They truly demonstrate the amazing power and skill of which The Gimme Gimmes has.
Overall, this album is one which old Gimme Gimmes fans will love, but will think has some downsides. People who never knew anything by the Gimme Gimmes may find this CD amusing, but won’t make them fall in love with the band. I do recommend it, but beware because there are some tracks which are not done nearly as well as they could’ve been.
