Slunt

Self Titled - Repossession Records

The first time I heard of the New York based rock band Slunt was when I got a copy of their EP in the mail. Like I do with all my CDs, I looked through the booklet; and being the young immature male that I am, the first though that came to me was “Wow, that chick is hot.” Of course, I was referring to Abby Gennet, the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band. Upon further research, I discovered that she even modeled a few times. And now guys, check this picture out, and try to say that you don’t find her hot? But after I overcame my teenybopperness, I had to come to my senses and see if these guys can play music as good as the singer looked.

Upon my first listen, I realized that the answer to my question was a definite yes. They play an addictive type of punk rock, which reminds me of their label mates The Fight. They combine heavy, intricate guitar riffs with incredibly naughty lyrics about relationships and sex. Abby’s vocals are strong, and infectious, they never seem whinny or too poppy. Backup singer and bassist Jenny Gunns also helps make the songs even more catchy with her smooth vocals in the background. You can’t help but sing along with the chorus of Never Say Never as they sing “I might like you better if we slept together“, unfortunately it’s difficult to sing the rest of the song because for some reason they left those lyrics out of the booklet. The album is filled with amazing guitar riffs, but they do know how to break it down for some kick ass solos on a few tracks too.

Once you get past the lead singer’s looks, you find a great EP for you to listen to. The hard hitting punk rock flows through your speakers and forces you to sing along with the infectious vocal melodies of Abby Gennet while you nod your head and tap your foot along with the energetic beat.
