Acid Rain - Lövely Records
Lövely name Sweet Teeth, sorry couldn’t help the quip. So a Swedish punk band who are now with Lövely Records, sounds so familiar? Well this label have gone from strength to strength over the past few years, now Sweet Teeth join the likes of Rotten Mind, Fred Lee & The Restless and Statues to name a few.
This Album/EP (what do 7 tracks make?) is their debut on the long play scene, it comes at a time when punk music has had a resurgence around the world, but more so it seems in their native Sweden, following in the footsteps of previously mentioned bands could be a shackle around the neck for some, but Sweet Tooth have built their own sound and created something that will stand on its own two feet.
Diving right in to the thick of this release it becomes immediately apparent that an influence has to some of what I would like to call hardcore spin off bands like Hüsker Dü or Fugazi, using a combination of noisy guitars, straight forward drum beats and a lyrical honesty that speaks truths and delivers no more than dreams, ambitions and yes that heartbreak thing creeps in too.
From the very first lines its hard not to get be drawn or even convinced that Dave Grohl might have some influence on the vocal output, ‘Shattered Glass’ being only 48 seconds of noise, power and borderline screaming vocally, its difficult to drag your mind away from exactly this. Then there’s the title track ‘Acid Rain’ with a full on 90’s indie pop, melodic rock sound, again the Foo’s stand out in there massively, this is not to say the band don’t have their own sound, yet its difficult to not draw all the comparisons along the way, take ‘Web Of Your Arms’ or ‘Her’, both bounce along in pretty much the same way, in fact it does seem that by the time you get to the only stand out track on this EP/Album hybrid ‘Tornado’ that everything does feel like it’s just muddled along with the lines being blurred between each track.
If you love you late 80’s/90’s indie hardcore rock, then go listen and enjoy, but don’t expect anything out there on the edge, just honest music played with love and energy.
