The Myriad

You Can't Trust A Ladder - Perfect Obligation Records

Before receiving this cd, I had no idea who The Myriad were, but Bobby assured me, “don’t worry, they are right up your alley.” Now this did not tell me much, considering I listen to such a broad range of music that it could really mean anything, so I had no idea what to expect.

After receiving the cd the one thing that I was impressed by before even listening to the cd was the booklet. The art in it was very well done, and the font used for lyrics was interesting. This of course gave me hope for this cd, until I actually read the lyrics. I found them to be very generic, and not entirely impressive, so right away I knew I would not be captivated by the message of the songs.

Though I was a little disappointed by this fact, I did not let it dither me because I have listened to music with terrible lyrics in the past, and have enjoyed the music quite thoroughly. Once the first song “stretched over” played I was very impressed, the tone of the song was very slow and seemed very meaningful. Another song which I enjoyed was “Perfect Obligation”. The beat in this song was a little faster then the rest of the cd, but still carried the same slow and meaningful mood established in the other songs.

Unfortunately, other then these two songs, I had a general distaste for this cd. All of the songs seemed to drone into one another, creating a longing for a change in style of music. I found it nearly impossible though the multiple times of listening to this record to pay attention to the whole thing. This is generally viewed as a bad thing, but I must say this cd is great for thinking, it let my mind wander and debate about the current events in my life. Sadly, this is not what I want a cd to do. I listen to music for enjoyment, not to drift off into the depths of my mind.

All in all, independently I love the songs on this cd, but once they are combined in their entirety they create an affect which leaves me uninspired, and lacking any serious emotion. I would recommend this cd if you are just trying to relax, or maybe trying to fall asleep quickly, but whatever you do, don’t let me catch you listening to it in a car, there are enough car accidents due to fatigue already.
