The two piece garage rock riot grrrl band Basic Bitches have released another single from their forthcoming full length, It Doesn’t Matter If It’s Cool. Accompanied by a technicolor animated video, Make Art is a song about art for art’s sake, about embracing imperfection, and about the creative freedom that comes from doing what you love, even if it’s not going to make you money, make you famous or make you look cool. The track, with spitfire lyrics that call out a plethora of odd and awesome artistic pursuits, also includes the words that would ultimately become the album title. Both a manifesto and a rallying cry, Make Art is a radical reminder that the only reason you need to make art is because you like it.
Taking the song’s primary objective to heart, guitarist and singer Naomi Scott made original drawings based on photos of the band by Mike Vorassi, which she animated and edited to match the song’s driving drumbeats and surf-inspired guitar riffs, and the band’s signature lyrical sass and punk-rock energy. Make Art is the second single and video taken from the album, following on from the Grey Gardens themed Start The World last month.
