After their current critically acclaimed album TANGK became their second to go straight to #1 in the UK Album Charts, IDLES have now shared its latest single, POP POP POP. It emerges as the band prepare for the first of two legs of North American shows during their extensive 2024 world tour. Widely acclaimed as one of the highlights of TANGKPOP POP POP is arguably the moment that deviates furthest from what you’d expect from IDLES. The sonic ambience is darker with a grittier hip-hop-tinged groove which lurches with grim menace. Yet the immediacy of its beat and Joe Talbot’s conversely upbeat lyricism with the terms “freudenfreude” and “joy on joy” balancing the sinister with the sweet.

“It’s a song about the beauty of having a kid and understanding how lucky you are to have a kid. And there’s a sense of a cycle when you have a child, when you’ve lost a parent and a child. I have a very huge sense of gratitude and weight behind being a parent because of what I’ve lost. I’m not saying I’m a better parent, or more connected because of that. But for me, I’m more connected than I would have been, I think, because of what I’ve lost. I’ve learned a sense of just joy from seeing her joy. And I think that’s amazing. And powerful. And I’m very grateful.” (Joe Talbot)
