Building upon Seattle’s history of bringing gritty, underground rock music to the surface, local female duo Kitty Junk are leaving their mark with the unique brand they call “junk-punk”. Kitty Junk throw glam on top of grunge and brings a feminine perspective to hard rock. Drummer Angela Dane combines these aesthetics to the extreme: she’s both a drum instructor and a Women’s Studies professor with a Ph.D. Guitarist Ryan Lee is also a music educator, and together they’ve co-founded multiple organizations to support women in music, including Womxn & Audio and Gear Fanatix. Kitty Junk‘s brand new debut album, Converse Theory, was recorded at Earwig Studio and the duo will be playing an album release show at Seattle’s High Dive on Thursday, October 28th.

Kitty Junk began as a side project for Dane and Lee, two of the three members of hard-rock trio Atrocity Girl. They used Kitty Junk as an outlet for their “pink-er” instincts, a way to keep creating while Atrocity Girl underwent lineup changes. After many sexist encounters in the music industry, Dane and Lee set out to create more gender-inclusive and POC-friendly spaces in heavy music. Their nonprofit organization Womxn and Audio provides classes, workshops, interviews, and a community for audio engineers, of which only about 5% are women. They’re also building a home studio setup that they plan to form into an indie imprint called Atrocity Records.
