Québec City’s Still Insane have released their new full length, When Friendship’s Not Enough, via Thousand Islands Records. Fast, honest and stripped of anything unnecessary, When Friendship’s Not Enough captures the energy that has kept Still Insane moving for two decades. Across a dozen tracks, the band delivers sharp riffs, catchy choruses and songs about friendship, independence, trust, conflict and the bond created by playing music together. The album’s focus track, Together, goes straight to the heart of that bond. Inspired by four friends gathering in a cramped practice room surrounded by old posters, cold beer and smoke in the air, the song celebrates the simple joy of getting together once a week and making the walls shake.
As Together makes clear, the real strength comes from what happens when they play and sing alongside one another. With equal parts sincerity and self-awareness, Together also acknowledges that nothing lasts forever. The band may joke about whether it will still be doing this in another 20 years, but for now, there is still nothing to prove and every reason to keep playing. Every song brings its own pace and personality, but “Together” sums up what has kept Still Insane going since the beginning: four friends, one room and the feeling that comes when everyone joins in.
