Superintendo Premiere “Hearts & Cliques” Video

We’re all slaves to the algorithm in one way or another. That’s the underlying theme of Superintendo‘s latest single, Hearts & Cliques. The song, which is the first single off the band’s upcoming full-length, We Will Not Be Undersold, explores the drive to create art that pleases the social media algorithm gods because of the backlash that occurs when art is created for its intended purpose. It’s contradictory to the art’s intended purposes, but we all fall prey to is, no matter how much we hate it. This punchy skate punk tune destined to please the algorithm while simultaneously critiquing it. Take that Internet! Hearts & Cliques is due out on the 4th September via Punkerton Records, ahead of tomorrow’s release the label has given The Punk Site has an exclusive premiere of the video.

“Hearts & Cliques is a critique of modern attention economics, algorithm driven art, the productive façade of social media, and self-loathing about my complicity in that system. I wrote it because we got a less than glowing review on another song which had a very long intro that “wouldn’t play” in the algo. It was a totally fair criticism and well-meaning. I thought the intro to that song was dope and I feel bad for people who write songs to please a computer. The song is basically saying fuck the system, please buy my record.” (vocalist & guitarist Luke West)
