The Baby Seals Drop New Single “Irene” & Announce Live Album

Cambridgee, UK’s The Baby Seals have shared their haunting new single, Irene, that coincides with the announcement that their new live album, Live At The Portland Arms, will be released on the 16th October via Trapped Animal Records. Irene was originally entitled Ode To Irene’s Cunt, but was shortened for radio friendly purposes! The single draws inspiration from Le Con d’Irène, a surrealist erotic novel about a man’s relationship with an imaginary vulva, whilst reflecting on how we can allow relationships and visions to be birthed and accepting unexplained unconditional connection. Engulfing the listener in its sweeping bass hooks and hushed tones, the track builds with a mystical allure as looped vocals ripple with a dark, otherworldly splendour to something fiercely captivating. Irene is accompanied by a homemade video that was made using footage from Graysmoor nature reserve, combined with visuals created by US artist Leslie Deere, to create something wonderfully spooky that perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the track. 

“There’s a quote that I love ‘you don’t have the power, you ARE the power’. When I gave birth to my son, I did it on breath alone, and I was in water (and pressing my clitoris, it sends pain relief to your body when in labour(!)) so it was a pretty magnificent centering primitive experience… I’ve always felt connected to water, I don’t know if that’s a universal experience we all have but I’ve always felt that. We’re in the era of division, disinformation and polarization. It’s more important than ever to remind myself to focus on our oneness, our similarities rather than our differences. Parenting also throws another slant; how do I explain the things that don’t make sense, to stay in the lane of truth when it can swing from being maddeningly obvious to abstract? We can all be a mother to ourselves, to our true nature, which is inherently peaceful and unconditional, and knowing our true nature is always available to us.
