Last week, on June 25th, 2010, the 16th annual Vans Warped Tour kicked off in Carson, California at the Home Depot Centre. Lanny and I flew out to the show to take part of in the festivities. We watched the bands, walked the grounds, took hundreds of photos, talked to bands and dove right into the chaos that surrounds the annual punk rock summer camp.
Over the next several weeks – as the tour moves all throughout North America – we will be sharing those photos with you, posting various interviews, and taking an in-depth look at different elements of the tour.
To kick off the soon to be weekly feature, we decided to talk to the behind the scenes people – the people you may not line-up to see but are instrumental to the functionality of the tour.
The 16th annual Vans Warped Tour kicked off in Carson, California on June 25th, 2010 and we were there to see the most famous music festival speed into gear. After the first day went off without a hitch, we caught up with Warped Tour founder and head honcho Kevin Lyman bright and early on day two in Mountain View. Once we finally found his tour bus amongst the sea of busses, we sat down and discussed the tour and the ideologies that Lyman hopes to share with the world through the travelling circus. Last year when we spoke, we examined the nitty gritty details of the tour, so this time we took a step back and took a big picture look at the tour to get a better understanding of exactly whatThe Warped Tour is meant to be.

You may not know the name Lisa Johnson but you’ve definitely seen her work. Over the past sixteen years, she’s earned the titled of Official Warped Tour Photographer as she’s taken pictures at every single tour; but she’s done so much more than just that. As one of the most sought after rock photographers, she’s worked with everyone from Rise Against, Strike Anywhere and Avenged Sevenfold to Sum41 and The Cramps – oh, and she shot Nirvana did I forget to mention that?
It has been her photos that have graced the cover of every single SideOneDummy Warped Tour compilation, she just teamed up with Hurley Clothing for a limited edition T-shirt run and she worked with Blink182 to develop a line of limited edition tour shirts for their reunion tour. As she prepared to shoot the sixteen annual Vans Warped Tour, we talked about what she looks for when finding that one perfect image to grace a shirt or the annual compilation, tips for new photographers, the iconic London Calling cover and the evolution of the Vans Warped Tour.

Not a lot of people think about it, but a touring band leaves a massive footprint. Not only are they constantly traveling around the country in a gas guzzling tour bus, but the venue is devouring energy to power the show and the fans are each driving a car to and from the venue, pumping even more carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. It’s a sad reality but a reality none the less but unlike most touring outfits, The Vans Warped Tour is aware of what’s happening are are trying to do the most they can to limit the damage they cause to the environment.
That’s where Tara Redavid comes in. She’s the Sustainability Coordinator at the Vans Warped Tour which means it’s her job to make sure the tour doesn’t leave too big of a carbon footprint when they pass through your town. On top of organizing dozens of volunteers in every city, Redavid is always on the look out for new ways to make the tour more energy efficient – from using plant starch forks in catering to a solar powered stage. Before the 2010 edition of the tour got underway, we talked to Redavid about everything that goes into making sure the tour stays clean, their goals in educating the public about recycling programs and how you, as a fan, can get involved.

Make sure to keep checking back as we will be posting more interviews over the next few weeks – including new interviews with The Bouncing Souls and VersaEmerge later this week. Next Saturday we will take a look at the musical education opportunity that the Warped Tour provides each and every year.
And don’t forget to go to the show when the festival passes through your town!
