Get Married

Songs For The Sleepless - Wiretap Records

California’s Get Married last release was the Into The Cosmos EP that came out at the tail end of 2016 via Wiretap Records, that release saw the band refine their doo-wop influenced pop punk. Get Married are now set to reveal their debut full length album, Songs For The Sleepless, that will be co-released by a partnership between two fiercely independent labels, Asian Man Records and the band’s longtime collaborators Wiretap Records, on August 17th 2018 on CD, limited run coloured vinyl and digital formats.

Adam West kicks off Songs For The Sleepless with a perfect power pop punk opener that reminisces about the past, in particular about a time when Batman was less Dark Knight and more camp crusader, Get Married continue to hit you with perfect poppy punk moments that are tempered with a more rock ‘n roll sensibility to keep them away from the pop punk packs well trodden and predictable path. There are moments when the doo wop influence comes to the fore, tracks such as Cinnamon Sugar, Coffee 2 and Around are perfect rock ‘n roll moments that blend perfectly into the mix, in acknowledgement of the pop punk influence there is a heartfelt acoustic number, Over Again, that for me is the album’s sole square peg.

When I reviewed the Into The Cosmos EP I compared Get Married to being akin to Elvis Costello fronting a cross between Silver Sun, Weezer and Masked Intruder, now we’re almost two years down the line, whilst the aforementioned influences are still present, along with a hit of good old rock ‘n roll, I get the feeling that with the release of the Songs For The Sleepless album Get Married have found their own identity, as this is an impressive and original album. Whilst Get Married may wear their influences on their sleeves the way they are blended makes the invitation to Get Married a very tempting one indeed, although I suspect it would take place in a chapel just off the strip in Las Vegas.
