Subatomic Party Cool - Alcopop Records
Beach Riot are a combination of four people, getting together and bringing a world of Rock n Roll fuzz-pop to the masses. ‘Subatomic Party Cool’ released on September 17th via Alcopop Records is their debut full length. Based in Brighton, this band has an eclectic line up, a mix of Radiohead loving, Dave Grohl envy and a touch of PJ Harvey idolisation seems to give them a fluid base of influence to make “Party Cool” music.
So how do you start an album that has been 3 years in the making, well you just go straight for the jugular and do what you do best with what is the best song of the album ‘B.A.D’ is a Rock n Roll giant of a track, a ballistic missile let loose on your ears, infectious riffs climb the heights, the fuzzy bass lines that adorn every track give a depth that can only be explained as bottomless.
“Only two guitarist” I here myself say, through out the sound is such that you feel like your surrounded by a plethora of guitars, a wall of sound, songs like ‘Wrong Impression’, ‘Medicate For Success’ and She’s A Hurricane’ stand up as the tornado’s in the room on this album, an album that by the way, has more than just it’s fair share of Iggy Pop swagger and plenty of glammed up Queens Of The Stone Age thrown in for good measure, ‘Wrong Impression’ shows all of these traits in spades.
Not only do you have the wind blown into your sails, but you also have the fire lit beneath your ass with every twist and turn in this album, ‘Unrequited Love’ is the only respite, but then this still has it’s strange Trampolene esque poetry to keep things interesting, ‘Faze’ on the other hand, gives Cami’s vocals a chance to shine above everything, a vocal that is far better than the few leads it’s allowed on the album.
Can we say this is a rock album? No, can we say this is a pop album? No, can we even say this is an indie album? No. What we can say is that this is an album full of highs, lows, glam, rock, blues, indie, and a huge splattering of punk.
P.S. the Dave Grohl envy bit at the beginning of this review, think he could be drooling at the licks in here.
