Poison Arrows - Lookout Records
When I got this album I had just started reading Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. I was immediately captivated by its intriguing and thought-provoking story. All I was doing for three days was reading the book. What does this have to do with Poison Arrows by Communiqué you ask? Well, since I was only reading, I didn’t have time to listen to CDs while on the computer and really study them. So I threw it into my 3-disc CD player and had it playing randomly in the background as I read the incredible book cover to cover. My initial reaction to the CD was very good. I liked it. It’s slow melodic sound flew flawlessly through my speakers filling my room with piano driven soft rock. The vocals were smooth and different then what we normally hear. The use of the keyboard gave the sound some jump, making the songs unique. I thought I found a great CD here unlike any other in my collection at the moment. So once I finished the book, I went back to my old ways and was on the computer. The first disc I played was, no surprised,Communiqué‘s Poison Arrows. I was paying close attention to it this time, trying to be pulled in to the songs the way I was while I was reading. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen.
It was slightly boring. Monotonous and didn’t really jump at me in anyway whatsoever. I was disappointed a lot. I was wondering if this was the same band I was listening to the day before, because it didn’t seem like it was. After a few listens I took it out and put it back in it’s case. Somewhat saddened to see that my initial reaction was proved wrong.
Now I am listening to the CD another time, and I’m feeling the same way I did the first time I heard it. The music is catching me, the vocal melodies are astounding, the keyboard gives a little jump to the music, and I love it. Why are my feelings changing so much? The only reason I can think of is that Communiqué is music you want to hear while you are doing other things. It is amazing background music for reading or writing, its smooth and lets you think without being intrusive and obnoxious. But when you are only listening to music and paying incredibly close attention to it, then it will not grab you as much. I believe that I will listen to this album a lot. While I’m falling asleep, while I’m reading, doing homework, or something like that. But when I want something to rock out to, I doubt this one will come to mind.
