Danger Friends

Zeros - Kung Fu Records

Danger Friends is a synth punk rock four piece from Ventura, California; and Zeros, their debut EP released through Kung Fu Records is a breath of fresh air in the land of synth music.

This isn’t a band that goes all in on the electronics to deliver a super polished or poppy sound like we’re used to. In stead, they don’t give a crap and do the opposite. You could describe Danger Friends as a punk rock band in the veins of PUP that plays synths in stead of guitars – and a band should definitely be credited for even trying that.

Zeros includes songs with catchy hooks, gripping riffs and powerful verses. The tune with the biggest hit potential is the title track. At first glance, it appears chaotic but in reality, it’s just a good old punk banger: verse, chorus, verse, chorus and done.

It’s not alone as all the other songs on this EP have catchy hooks underneath various layers of synth madness. Carousel is a tad slower, which leaves more room for the synths to surface. It also features a rhythmic pause, which is a funny thing to do with keyboards. It’s So Safe is the perfect ending to this crazy ass EP. A catchy song – again – you can easily sing a long too if you just repeat “It’s so safe” 39 times (I counted). There’s a few other lines in it as well but who cares for those?

I’m not a big fan of synths, this EP didn’t change that. I’m old fashioned or something. That doesn’t mean the songs aren’t worth discovering. So by no means let my phobia of electronics be contagious, check out this EP by your new Danger Friends.
