¡CARAJO! - OK! Good Records
German five piece punk band Donots have now been in existence for more than two decades, have almost a thousand concerts under the collective belts and this is their tenth studio album, so how I haven’t managed to encounter them before is a bit of a mystery to me but this is something I’m glad has been rectified.
On it’s initial play this didn’t immediately grab my attention… yet something about it made me give it another listen… and then turn up the volume and play it again. ¡CARAJO! somehow manages to improve with every listen and as you warm to it you can pick up influences and subtleties that aren’t immediately apparent on your first exposure. The album bridges anthemic melodic hardcore and pop punk effortlessly, This is not to say this is a one dimensional affair, the album features three slower thoughtful acoustic tracks and infuses ska into the track Problem What Problem. ¡CARAJO! boasts fourteen solid tracks of rabble rousing politically charged punk rock.
If you want authentic well informed punk you can’t go far wrong with this album. It adds to the credibility of the album, and the band, that in their home country of Germany the track No Part of It has become something of an anti-Nazi anthem.
The Donots have released the album digitally and are due to have a physical release of the album in North America via OK! Good Records next month. It was previously recorded entirely in German and released in 2015 under the title, Karacho, however this release features newly recorded vocals in English. My only criticism is that an expanded version of the German release exists with an additional live cd and it would be nice to have the additional live tracks and the original German versions of the songs available outside their home country. Regardless of this minor complaint this is an album that seriously deserves your attention.
¡CARAJO! is currently available digitally in North America via iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play and it can be streamed on Spotify and Bandcamp and is being released physically in North America on May 20th via OK! Good Records and can be ordered here.
