Manchester Punk Festival have released the 38th volume of their compilation series ahead of this year’s festival. Manchester Punk Festival Vol. 38 is…
Nothing Is Heavier Than The Mind - Man Demolish Records
Hull’s NEWMEDS formed in 2018 from the remnants of local outfits Winterfylleth, Drowners and The Colour Line, the band came together to play hardcore in its purest form, now they have released their debut EP “Nothing Is Heavier Than The Mind” via Man Demolish Records. The release is a cathartic transmission of anger and frustration with the state of the world, it also serves as a clarion call to the underdogs of the world, NEWMEDS angst ridden brand of rasping raw punk explores and unearths themes of self-forgiveness, physical health, mental health, climate change and drinking culture on the EP’s trio of intense tracks
NEWMEDS smack you straight between the eyes with the title track from “Nothing Is Heavier Than The Mind“, a song that openly addresses depression and the internal struggle that this generates. The EP takes a darker turn with ‘Twenty Three‘, a track that flips the outlook from the EP’s opening track and examines physical health, through the lens of singer Nick Cobley‘s battle with Crohn’s disease, and also reflects on consumer culture, climate change and the fleeting nature of life. The latter of those themes returns on the EP’s finalè, ‘The High Life’, a track that looks deep into itself in the search for the meaning of life, and concludes their is no god and that life has no purpose or meaning, stark, brutal and oddly life affirming.
There’s a genuine fire and fury embedded deep within the DNA of NEWMEDS that comes through loud and clear on every single track, something that sits alongside a defiant attitude and a desire to overcome challenges and not submit or accept defeat. “Nothing Is Heavier Than The Mind” is a brutal and honest short sharp shock that possesses the same spirit and defiant tone as Gallows, Touche Amore and Turnstile, if NEWMEDS can maintain and channel their vitriol and anger then their debut full length has the potential to be something very special.
