EP Review: Starter Jackets – Fucked It Up For Everyone

Starter Jackets have their roots in Springfield IL and are a 4 piece who create some simply outstanding Punk-Power/Pop-Rock music, made up of Fred Malcom, Matt Sailor, Luke McNeill and Lanny Durbin, although the writing and vocal credits are both shared by Lanny & Luke.  This EP hopefully is only a stopgap until they get round to realising what would be their 2 album, the first being “Decisions” back in 2018.

With Luke & Lanny each writing & singing 2 songs on this EP, your not only getting some of what can only be described as possibly the best Power Pop/Punk songs ever written, your getting an EP that just oozes everything that fans of this style could ever want, from the first amazingly grungy riff that leads you into “Bad Application” Track No1, that also gives up the EP’s title in the lyric and Lanny’s first offering to the EP, to the pretty much perfect stonkingly (yeah made up word) catchy ending riff of “Dark Days” Luke’s 2nd offering.  And in the middle you totally find yourself wondering if it can ever really get any better! 

Now comes the bit where as a reviewer you have to sit back and think are there any negatives that can be written about an EP full of almost mainstream music in quality and give it a slating for selling out to the world of making music just so that everybody can say how awesome it is. 

But here’s the problem, there are no negatives and it isn’t a sell out, this is just simply music made with passion filled with lyrics that are grounded fully in the Punk ethos, it just happens to sound so fucking great, that it actually out shines any budget busting production.

So lets just sum up, 4 tracks only!  Yeah only!  This EP is over far too quickly and so much more could be written about it, but let’s just say I’m not one for spoiling the fun that so many more listeners are gonna get by simply hitting play and making their own conclusions.  But no it wouldn’t be too over stretching the mark to say that as far as this genre goes, you would be hard pushed to find a better example ever!
