Mest

Self Titled - Maverick Records

After a wait of a little less then two years, Mest are back with their fourth album, a self-titled one. Like many bands lately, this four piece has matured quite a lot since their last release. Their lyrical content is more mature, their music tighter and has a more overall mature feel to it. This is somewhat disappointing at times as you lose some of their high school humor (ala Fucked Up Kid in Destination Unknown) but is at the same time very rewarding.

Mest have slowed down the pace of the songs of most of the songs a notch or two; leaving only a track or two with a energetic rhythm which gets your heart pounding and blood flowing, the rest are more ballard-like songs. As they have done before, Mest sings about their personal life and feelings. Songs about graduation (Jaded), the state of the world (Burning Bridges), murder (25 To Life – the bonus track), not giving up (Chance Of A Lifetime) all come flowing through the speaker system. The lyrics themselves are very powerful and come out of Tony’s mouth with melodic feel which gets caught in your brain. They are the sort of lyrics which get you reaching for the booklet over and over again.

The musical stylings from one song to another is somewhat diverse. But the main thing which stands out on most tracks are the drums. They have a certain sound to them which makes them stand out and above, while never overpowering and taking total control. Mest is a good album for any Mest fan, it probably won’t change your mind that much about them if you were never a fan of the band though.
