Meaning In The Static - Victory Records
I’ve been putting off reviewing this for a while, I wrote something up for it a little while ago but it wasn’t so much a cd review as it was me getting pissed off and bitching about the music industry. But I guarantee that anyone who actually cares about the music scene will feel the same way about this band that I did. So instead of listening to On The Last Day, during this review, I’m going to listen to Righteous Jams andBad Brains instead. Simply because I remember what On The Last Day sounded like(can you believe that I had to listen to the entire cd?) and it’s a vain attempt for me to stay at least somewhat positive while I bitch and moan about another shitty record.
First I would like to thank Victory Records for flooding every music store in North America with this bullshit. I would also like to thank Bobby Gorman for passing this crappy cd off on me, I wish I could do the same to someone else, but if anyone actually gives this cd a positive review, they deserve cancer. On The Last Day is pretty much everything that every other band of the whiny-rock band, sporting black hair and tight pants genre has already done. I think this is fairly accurate: “For fans of AFI, Aiden, Atreyu & Rise Against.” Although if you liked AFI while they were still part of the whole east bay hardcore thing, the former statement was a blatant slap to the face, you can thank promotional people for that. Anyway’s, this band is epitomized by about the same musical talent that you see in Atreyu. There’s guitar solos only played on three different notes with a changed up picking patterns that go fast, so it’s not really a guitar solo, its just playing three high notes quickly. The riffs sound like they’ve been reused a thousand times by this band and handfuls of others. It sounds like they have a double kick, but with the speed they play it at, they might as well just have stuck to a single kick(maybe with the money they saved they could buy some lessons and learn to play their instruments). The bass lines are background noise and they play along to the drumming. Now for the part I despised the most, the vocals. I was reminded of Silverstein, with the whole bitchy sounding singer to appeal to the little girls and a screamer to make every guy listening to the band feel more masculine. I hate pretty much every aspect of their music, although I can only hope that this trend is finally petering out. My last straw was when I saw that this band had a dedication to Raybeez on the back(I’m sure most Victory Records covers have them though), the deceased vocalist from Warzone. Some people know this, obviously not this band though, but Warzone wrote a certain song, Don’t Forget The Struggle, Don’t Forget The Streets. It opens with “In our minds and in our hearts, we feel that hardcore music should stay out of big business and stay in the streets where it belongs. All you kids out there, always keep the faith!” In case some people are missing the “hidden” meaning in that statement, the chorus of the song is “Don’t forget the struggle, don’t forget the streets, don’t forget your roots, DON’T SELL OUT!” I think it’s pretty fucking obvious what he means. Yet this piece of shit band(On The Last Day) dares to call themselves hardcore. They might as well piss on Rays grave. The minute you decide to play just for the money and not for the fun of playing music, you disrespect what the entire “punk” genre of music stands and stood for.
Don’t buy into this band, chances are if you already like music similar to it, you’d just be wasting your money on something you’ve already heard. But if you hate this music as much as me, please do anything in your power to make sure that your friends aren’t listening to this trash. Bands like this are ruining music and they’re corrupting the genres they claim to be. Every time I hear some jock, hockey boy call some douche in tight pants and wearing eyeliner “emo” I can’t help but cringe. But I digress, this band is just trying to be trendy, so I can only hope they fade out and all die from drug overdoses.
