I Think I'm Ready - Lavasocks Records
Sad Girls Club are a South California trio who play fast paced pop punk, with just a little sadness, well at least on this latest EP they do. This release has all of the biggest emotions wrapped up in a melodic overcoat. As all good EP’s should, this is a precursor to what may be to come when the next full length arrives, a potted version of something grander.
Three songs that as they should, leave you wanting more, an intense sense of loss fills your head when it ends, and the waiting begins until a fix comes your way.
‘I Think I’m Ready’ the title track kicks us off, immediately the upbeat sound clashes with what could be a very emotionally draining subject, break ups are always something that seem to make there way into many a song, yet this doesn’t feel like a break up song, in fact its more of a coming out song, a freedom song. ‘Problems’ follows a very similar line, an angst filled look back at a wasted relationship, again Sad Girlz Club have got their own way of dealing with such dour subject matter, they fill it with screaming vocals, foot tapping melodies and catchy as hell hooks. The balance of vocals on this EP works so perfectly, too much sugar sweet can be a turn off after a couple of songs, so the abrasive nature of the male vocal layers everything and keeps the ears and brain listening and not switching over to background mode, enter ‘Tossing & Turning’ the best track by a country mile, Against Me sprang to mind immediately, good old punk rock roll at its best!
I Think I’m ready to go the full on 15 tracks please. Nothing in here that will have you rebelling against the world, nothing that breaks the mould, but plenty to have you bouncing around and feeling great, a well hidden somber sadness, what more could we ask for?
