Shutup - Bad Granola Records / Bredda Records
After witnessing Millie Manders play a spellbinding solo set at this years Rebellion Festival the arrival of their latest release, the Shutup EP, is something that brightened my day somewhat. The Shutup EP was produced by Millie Manders and The Shutup, recorded by Musa Henderson at Brinks Records and mixed and mastered by Oz Craggs at Hidden Track Studios, the end result is that the four tracks contained on the band’s latest release provides a perfect snapshot of exactly where Millie Manders And The Shutup are right now.
The opening to Right To Life showcases the soulful range of Millie Manders vocals before the song kicks into upbeat ska the demonstrates the versatility of her voice, not to mention the razor sharp backing from The Shutup that makes this a perfect opener, Brave continues the perfect blend of elements with a track that reminds you that the heyday of ska punk isn’t necessarily buried in the past. Lollipops brings a moment of perfect politically fuelled punk attitude before the EP’s lead single, One That Got Away, brings a perfect quartet of tracks to a close.
In the press release the band’s eponymous front woman stated that “this sound is, in our opinion, the best we have ever had” and I cannot disagree with her, the combination of punk, ska and soul, along a touch of rock ‘n roll, is irresistible, the mix of styles is the perfect showcase for Millie Manders And The Shutup as their latest release is nothing short of faultless. Each track highlights a different facet of Millie Manders And The Shutup and after hearing the Shutup EP my only regret is that I didn’t catch their set at the Rebellion Festival, but as they are perpetually on tour this is something I’ll be rectifying later this year.
