Single Review: The All Brights – The White Album EP

California’s The All Bright‘s are the self styled purveyors of ‘Jimmy Buffet meets punk rock’, that allegedly originated in Coolsville USA, they deliver the kind of feel good punk rock that exists for no other reason than to put a smile on your face. The White Album EP kicks off with Maximum Hangtime, quite possibly the best song to have queued up on your playlist for the first day of your holiday, this is not punk rock that challenges the status quo, this is a short fast celebration of fun in the sun, this is followed by Last Blue Text, a tale of trying to reach out to someone over social media and being rejected, that ends with a knowing nod to The Misfits.

The White Album EP continues to deliver sun splashed humour with Midwest Fuck Me, a track that takes the EP into dub punk territory, and asks the question of how you can play reggae when you’re stuck in Ohio, whilst The Ballad Of Me And My Funds is possessed by the poppier spirit of The Yuppie Pricks. Stand Up Pat L. Board is an inspirational number for those of us can’t surf and finally I’m Buying A Boat continues the holiday theme with track that is led by ukelele and lapping waves that explores the prospect of sailing out to sea, leaving your partner and starting over again, although as the song is seen from both sides of the relationship it flips the whole thing on it’s side.

The All Brights EP is perfect punk pop, the reverse order is intentional as the punk is very much to the forefront, The All Brights don’t seem to take anything seriously and there is nothing wrong with this as the lyrics bring a smile to your face and in places they are genuinely funny, something I don’t encounter very often in band’s that are playing things for laughs. The All Brights are the punk equivalent of a warm sunny day and a cold beer, and they are just as welcome, and I can guarantee that The All Brights will be playing when I hit the beach, or at least a bar adjacent to one, later this summer.
