Something Corporate – Leaving Through The Window

Something Corporate shows us just how wide the punk genre can go with this mellow pop-punk album. This 5 man band has a special something that you don’t see in many bands now a days: a piano player. Andrew McMahon is the pianist and lead vocals in this amazing band along with Brian Ireland on drums, Josh Partington and William Tell on guitar and then rounding of the 5 guys is Clutch on bass. But there’s still more, instead of only one or two guys lending vocals, you get vocal talents from all 5 guys in this album. From track 1 (I Want To Save You) all the way to track 14 (Globes And Maps) this CD is full of amazing melodramatic songs.

Leaving Through The Window starts off with the song, I Want To Save You.  It starts off with a great opening beat, introducing all the instruments one after another then introduces Andrew’s vocals. Its a song about a beautiful girl that is always being used and is unappreciated but there’s someone who wants to “save her” and help her out.

The next song is Punk Rock Princess which starts off a lot harder then the previous song, this time the song is played without a piano. An incredibly catchy song about someone asking a girl to be him “punk rock princess”. I Woke Up In A Car is the next song on the album. A cool song with wonderful tunes through out it all.

Now this song most punk fans have heard by now, iF yoU C Jordan is the 4th song in Leaving Through The Window. Its a song about a stocker that hated the person in the song since high school and wont leave him alone. The funny thing is when ever I hear this song, I think of Jordan Pudnik from New Found Glory as the  “Jordan” in the song, I wonder if there’s a little rivalry in the label-mates or I am just imagining things again. Speaking of New Found Glory, lets skip ahead to song number 8, Fall. As the song starts out it sounds exactly like a NFG song. This son is one of my favorites on the album with a harder beat then the rest of it the CD. Once again this song has no piano in it.

Now to back up to songs 5,6 and 7: The Astronaut, Hurricane and Cavanaugh Park. My 3 favorite songs. I cant describe the exact reason why I love the song, The Astronaut. There’s just something wonderful about it, I was hooked to the song the first time I hear it. Hurricane begins with a guitar riff that goes along perfectly with the vocals and then goes into a hard drum beat before entering the 2nd verse. Right before the 4th verse it the beat slows down to finish of the song right in till the chorus is repeated once more at the end of the song. Cavanaugh Park is another slow song about someone remembering all the good times they had in the park.

We’ve already talked about Fall so now lets talk about Straw Dog and Good News. Straw Dog is a cool slow song, with a wonderful chorus. “Hey now, The straw dog out in the street, Hey now, There are chemicals in the clouds, Hey now…”

Good News covers a topic that we are all a part of: life. The person wants to read good news again, but there’s nothing. He wants to go back in time, when he’s a little kid before all the problem, when there was some good news.

Drunk Girl is a very simple slow song. About a guy who kissed a drunk girl then regretted it. Its a really good slow and song, with some harder beats through out it.  The final 3 songs, Not What It Seems, You’re Gone and  Globes And Maps are all quite good. The first of the 3 is a pretty good song, although nothing spectacular. You’re Gone is an amazing song. It starts off harder then the rest of the CD and is full of catchy tunes. It about someone that is very popular and doesn’t care much about it. The final song, Globes And Maps, is an incredibly slow and soft song. Its a pretty good song and a good ending to the CD.
