The F-Ups

Self Titled - Capitol Records

The F-ups are just four eighteen year olds who just got out of high school and won a local talent show. From that they went on to sign to Capitol Records and record their debut, self titled, album. Without much touring under their belts, will these guys be able to make it through the Warped Tour this year? Well, if this CD is any indication, the answer is a solid yes.

The 12 song CD is incredibly mind sticking. Each song is catchy and there isn’t one weak song throughout the entire album. Their immature pop-punk style will be immediately swallowed up by America’s MTV generation. They are fast paced, quick, energetic, and just plain fun. Their lyrics are simple, what do you expect when you write the songs at the tender age of 13, so they easily get implanted into your skull. They tend to repeat the same things over and over again in their songs, but it never becomes repetitive somehow. Its the type of song that you could imagine singing along to in a moshpit. Running around in the circle pit, throwing up your fist at each “SCREW YOU!” or “I DON’T KNOW!”. You don’t really need to reach for a lyrics sheet and try to find hidden meanings in the songs as The F-ups don’t have much to talk about other then being lazy (Lazy Generation and I Don’t Know), overbearing parents (Screw You and Look At Your Son Now), and sexual experimentation (Crack Ho). They even do a cover song ofMott The Hoople‘s All The Young Dudes.

The production is seamless, which is what you expect to get from a major label release. Its clean, although it does carry a “Parental Advisory” sticker on the cover, and very accessible. With the right push and some good promotion, this band will hit it big with help from MTV and the radio. They will become house hold names like Blink182Simple Plan, or Good Charlotte; and then have a lot of pressure for their sophomore release. But for now, I am happy to listen to this CD over and over and over again, singing along to the seamless songs and just having a fun time.
