The Muslims

Fuck These Fuckin’ Fascists - Epitaph Records

Durham, NC punk band The Muslims are set to release their new album, Fuck These Fuckin Fascists, digitally via Epitaph Records on September 24th, due to the ongoing demand on pressing plants the CD and Vinyl will follow in it’s wake on November 5th. The release of the band’s latest full length follows on from their 2018 self titled debut, 2019’s Mayo Supreme and 2020’s Gentrified Chicken. In case you hadn’t picked up on the subtle hint from the album’s title this is a twelve track fuck you to the far right that, like the best releases of this nature, addresses it’s subject matter with vitriol, humour, compassion and outright rage, but this is not a band walking in the footsteps of past torch bearers, The Muslims are doing things on their own terms.

The opening track, Hands Up Don’t Shoot, is a chaotic and riotous opener, this is swiftly followed by Crotch Pop A Cop that carries a completely different vibe to it’s predecessor, it keeps the same levels of chaotic vitriol but delivers it in a more accessible blast of punk rock. The target of the opening brace shouldn’t need any explanation, neither does the heartfelt recent single Unity, that segues perfectly into Illegals that addresses the paranoia and racism that eternally circles round the subject of immigration. The short and sweet Kill Your Masters and the album’s title track are both incendiary calls to arms that don’t pull any punches.

The half way point is marked with IDGAF, a riotous blast of cowpunk that is followed, as everything seems to have been lately, by the hardcore cathartic blast of Coronavirus. GCDC and Froot Of The Loom keep the strident beat alive as The Muslims continue to embrace and twist their many influences to their own design. The penultimate track, Live Laugh Lead, is a life affirming singalong rant before we get to the wonderfully titled closing track, John McCain’s Ghost Sneaks Into The White House And Tea Bags The President, that is the album’s most unexpected track, chaos and melody combine to underline that the resistance has a sense of humour.

Once you attune yourself to the constantly shifting joyous chaos of The Muslims part Riot Grrrrl, part old school punk rock, part hardcore, part whatever sound there is no going back. This short and sweet blast of an album delivers a dozen chaotic tracks in just under 22 minutes with the bulk of the tracks clocking in at under two minutes and only one stretching towards the three minute mark, something that means that The Muslims get straight to the point on each track, and every track has a point, a point that is always honed to a razors edge. Think back to the bands over the years that have delivered defining political punk albums that also managed to be life affirming, challenging and joyful, and then add The Muslims to that list.
