Don't Blame The Peach - Alcopop! Records

It might not come as any surprise to those of you who have seen Twat Union live or listened to their music, this is a feminist collective who are as feral as you’d like all bands of this persuasion to be, why tame it down when it need saying and doing, just say it and do it. Some in the music industry believe calling yourself Twat Union is some kind of a kamikaze manoeuvre, personally I’d call it genius, the name itself made me go see them live for the first time at Bearded Theory a few years back, was I disappointed, the short answer is no.

Twat Union

This is the point in this review of their new EP ‘Don’t Blame The Peach’ where I hold my hands up and say that i do get all of what this bands sings about, and I understand all of their nuances and comedy, but with the disclaimer of not actually being fully aware of all the workings of the female mind and body first hand.

‘WFH’ working from home, or wanking from home, either way this is a song you’ll know so well if you have had the pleasure of seeing Twat Union live. It’s an opener that sets up just how open this band is to everything that needs saying, it switches the narrative to the female POV which is so refreshing. ‘Tiny Little Shorts’ drops in without a by your leave, and thats just how it should be, a song with a raised middle finger to the opposite sex, you know the ones that see tiny little shorts long legs, put two and two together and come up short in the brain cell count. This is an unapologetic song that says “swivel on this!” and is backed up with a banging musical backdrop.

If you were in any doubt about this bands motives or thoughts on open mindedness, you’ll get to the next track, the self explanatory ‘Period Sex’, and if your still left feeling lost after this, then maybe all hope is probably lost, this is laid bare life at the real end, backed up by a soundtrack that slams just as hard as the lyrical content. So we’ve had the normalising of exploring female sexuality, the misogyny called out, sex outside the head and not bottled up inside. Now comes the misogyny again, can you see the theme here, yeah just how women feel the need to keep telling home truths loudly until it sticks, and if it doesn’t stick, shout it again, its gotta be so damn tiring.

‘Pay Me More’ covers this so fucking well, why do you have to keep apologising for asking to be treated as an equal, why does having something different between your legs set you apart, isn’t that just like seeing skin colour as something that makes you a lesser person, its just as hard to take. Finishing off this very very upfront and no holds barred EP (I wouldn’t want anything less) ‘W.I.T.C.H.’ somehow encapsulates everything that makes this a band to stand up and shout about. This songs touches every nerve of how being a woman means you have to somehow prove yourself day in day out, how having hormones and emotions should never mean fighting the witch hunt until you die. Strip away all the lyrical brilliance, the comedy elements, the theatre of this EP, and what are you left with, a fun Rock n Roll party with your mates.

The limited edition pink vinyl, featuring both EP’s, Don’t Blame The Peach and Don’t Look It In The Eye, can be ordered from Alcopop! Records. You can check out Twat Union on Facebook and through their Website.
