AmyJo Doh & The Spangles Drop New Single “It’s A Girl”

AmyJo Doh & The Spangles, the Madrid-based punk rock outfit fronted by British singer-songwriter AmyJo Doherty, have today released their new single, It’s a Girl, through Strap Originals. The song begins with the familiar absurdity of a gender-reveal party, pink cake, blue cake, “it’s a girl!”, before rapidly opening out into something much bigger: a roll call of women written out of history and a refusal to accept the patterns of silencing that have followed them. It’s the sound of a band stepping fully into what they call “punk with a purpose”: raw, riotous and danceable, but with something to say.

It’s a Girl also features a Spanish-language b-side, Menú del Día, that is a love letter to the classic dishes and lunchtime chaos of Madrid’s traditional tascas. Everyone, the band insist, is welcome to pull up a chair, except racists and fascists. The band will be following their recent UK run with shows in Sevilla on the 11th September and Madrid on the 12th September. The Madrid date is an Amnesty International partnered single launch and held at the DIY punk haunt Sala La Trinchera.
