“A celebratory anthem for the commoners, the undesirables and the working class.” That’s how Clobber guitarist Joey Brazil sums up their brand new single, Council Estate of Mind. It’s been a journey since the release of their debut EP, Tribal Rites of the New Friday Night, back in 2022. It didn’t take long for the band to climb the UKHC ranks and in 2023 Yesterday’s Heroes, Tomorrow’s Snide was released through Gallows‘ own label Venn Records. The band’s uncompromising blend of old fashioned street punk and hardcore thrash has seen the London bruisers share stages with the likes of Grade 2 and Madball, this year they’re jumping on shows with The Chisel, The Last Resort and Sick of It All as well as announcing a bunch of Summer Festivals.

Already well known for blisteringly fast, short bursts of music, Clobber pump the brakes a little on Council Estate of Mind, leaning towards a more ’77 style of punk rock. To further place the band in that era, the whole track was recorded live. “We’ve always thought about recording live so we could keep some of the natural room sound and feeling and this was the first time we did it. The end result blew our expectations out of the water.” Brazil continues, “We wanted to do it specifically for this single to capture the bright, upbeat nature of the song while keeping the grit”.

This new single is a reminder of where the band came from. “It’s an upbeat anthem that refuses to be looked down on”, states Brazil. “It peers through the window of my childhood growing up on my old council estate in Bermondsey, South London where despite not having much, we also had it all. There wasn’t much to do apart from get a chase from the old bill, throw things at windows and wonder where the next £7.50 will come from for a bottle of cheap vodka and 10 cigarettes. The single art features a photo of that same estate, Marden Square in Bermondsey, London.”
