Cherry Red Records have released Ninja Legends 1983-1989, a comprehensive 4CD box set by the legendary Frank Chickens. The retrospective captures the eclectic and pioneering spirit of the band, featuring their seminal albums We Are Frank Chickens, Get Chickenized and Club Monkey, along with a compilation of BBC live sessions recorded for John Peel, Richard Skinner and Janice Long. Formed in the early 1980s by Kazuko Hohki and Kazumi Taguchi, Frank Chickens quickly gained a cult following with their unique blend of Japanese folk, pop and punk influences. Known for their humorous and satirical approach, the band challenged stereotypes and broke cultural barriers.

“As I’ve been performing in Frank Chickens for so long (more than forty years!), Frank Chickens has become a multitude of things to me – art, heritage, a community, an attitude and a vision. It’s become a perfect art form for me, within which I can imagine, create and communicate. It was really exciting to go back to its origins in the 80s through this back catalogue. It has inspired me to keep going even longer!” (Kazuko Hohki)

This Ninja Legends 1983-1989 box set offers a deep dive into the creative legacy of Frank Chickens. You can catch a live performance from Kazuko Hohki featuring the art and music of Frank Chickens at Ura Matsuri in London’s Hoxton Hall on the 19th October.
