Formed during the early days of summer 2017, Bristol noise punks Heavy Lungs can’t help but feel like a product of their environment. Viewed through one pair of eyes, Bristol is a city that could tend to linger in darkness, but through those same eyes on a full night’s sleep it’s also a place that’s full of joy, occasional sunshine, students, struggling independent venues, pingers, mushrooms, acid, cocaine, weed, poppers and good cheap mojitos from that new Cuban place, the one next to the constant street fire. Add that all together with a smattering of “FUCK THE TORIES!” and you have the basic foundations of a music scene.

Freshly signed to Alcopop! Records for 2023 the band have now released their debut album, All Gas No Brakes, that does exactly what it says on the tin, a fast, ferocious and furiously fun ride. Across the record, and especially on singles Dancing Man, All Gas No Brakes, Head Tilter and Plagiarism, the band examine topics of anxiety, guilt, and mental health, but they’re never too far away from that healthy dose of Heavy Lungs humour. Be it redefining plagiarism and really making it their own, or musing on the inevitability of growing old and uncool, there’s a sense of mischief throughout.

Taking a ‘throw everything at the wall and see what sticks’ approach to songwriting, the band’s collaborative style is typical of the gang mentality that permeates Heavy Lungs culture, and has resulted in a powerhouse collection of snarling noise punk songs that have been fine tuned to within an inch of their lives. The band will be hitting the road in October 2023 for a run of UK headline tour dates in support of the album, with further plans for extensive touring and live appearances heading into the new year.
