In Memoriam: Lou Reed (1942-2013)

Lou ReedLou Reed, the legendary producer and guitarist best known for his work with Velvet Underground, has passed away today at the age of 71.

While no official cause of death has been released, it is suspected that he passed away due to an ailment related to his recent liver transplant. Reed died in Southampton, and had been, according to his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, in frail health for months. Reed shared a home in Southampton with his wife and fellow musician, Laurie Anderson, whom he married in 2008.

Despite never reaching the commercial success similar to that of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, Reed’s influence remains to this day as Velvet Underground opened up a new world of possibilities for punk and alternative rock – showing an important focus on lyrics and the power of a simplistic and bare-bones guitar style. As Brian Eno once said:

“The first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years. I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!”

CTV and Rolling Stones have bought written lengthy obituaries looking back at his career and impact, celebrating the musican’s life and music.

Our deepest condolences go to his families, friends and fans.
