The Punk Site is saddened to learn that Mensi, the lead singer of legendary punk band The Angelic Upstarts, finally succumbed to the Covid that he had been fighting in hospital. Mensi and The Angelic Upstarts punctuated punk’s second wave with a series of classic singles such as The Murder Of Liddle Towers, I’m An Upstart and Teenage Warning, the band continued to tour and release new music with their final full length, Bullingdon Bastards, being released in 2015. Mensi always wore his heart and his politics on his sleeve, he was a staunch anti-fascist who always supported others and fought for a better world. The Punk Site sends it’s condolences to his family, friends and bandmates.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I have to pass on the news that Mensi, the singer of the Angelic Upstarts, one of the bravest, cleverest and most dedicated socialists and anti fascists I have ever met and someone I have stood with on many occasions, has died this afternoon. He will never be forgotten by all of us who knew him and my heartfelt condolences go to his family. One of the great voices of the original punk generation is still, but his music will live on for as long as decent people stand up against injustice.” (Atilla The Stockbroker)
