“Motor City Is Burning” Box Set Announced

Motor City Is Burning: A Michigan Anthology 1965-1972 is a four-hour triple CD anthology of the vibrant, wildly eclectic Michigan music scene in the late 60s and early 70s. The box set features key Motor City tracks stretching from the Motown and Invictus labels to the proto punk artists such as The Stooges, Alice Cooper, MC5 and many others. The most populous city in the state of Michigan, Detroit exuded a rock ‘n’ roll mentality like no other American town. Famously home to Tamla Motown, the Motor City also hosted a plethora of artless teen garage bands, blue-collar heartland rockers, proto punks, psychedelic soul crews and hard rock heavyweights.

Named after the song that referenced the heavily reported Detroit civil unrest of July 1967, ‘Motor City Is Burning is a primer of the Michigan music scene that will be released via Cherry Red Records on the 21st March 2025. Hit singles are joined by key album cuts, cult 45s and a raft of private label and rare tracks. Motor City Is Burning is accompanied by a 48-page booklet with rare photos and the story behind each track, it also chronicles Michigan’s leading venues, principal recording studios, local labels and key backroom players as well as the bands themselves.
