Ahead of this year’s Rebellion Festival we’re asking a selection of the band’s who are appearing about what we can expect, and for their advice on surviving the four day festival. In the eighth of The Punk Site‘s Rebellion Festival previews we feature Headsticks, their distinct brand of punked up roots rock & roll blends barbed lyrics, anthemic choruses and addictive melodies that ooze honesty, integrity and raw energy. Live performances, as well as their two LP’s, Muster and Feather And Flame, continue to receive rave reviews from pillars of both the worlds of folk and punk and their unique style is attracting attention from near and far as the band continue their epic crusade to say it like it is. The Rebellion Festival will be taking place at Blackpool Winter Gardens between the 2nd & 5th August 2018, you can view the full line up & purchase tickets for this years festival here.

Is this your first experience of the Rebellion Festival or have you played before?
This is Headsticks’ third consecutive Rebellion appearance, having played originally in 2016 on the Introducing Stage to a packed room , followed by 2017’s Arena Stage performance, again to a packed room!
What can we look forward to from your set?
We have two sets this year, Almost Acoustic and full band onslaught too!!! With the acoustic set were aiming to strip back some of our better known tunes to offer completely different, slightly laid back, versions, as well as mixing with some of the songs we do basically acoustic anyhow! On the Pavilion Stage we’ll be playing a a mixture of songs from our established two studio albums, as well as a few from our forthcoming third album….maybe even an untried song or two should rehearsals ahead of Rebellion go well!
What makes the Rebellion Festival special for you?
Rebellion is so special as it really is a gathering of the masses for festival of the very finest musical insubordination! It’s an absolute monster of an event, and the atmosphere is so uplifting from start to finish and it’s a melting pot of styles from the punk and alternative scenes….From a band point of view it’s a great opportunity to play on a level playing field with some of the biggest names out there with superb sound systems and lighting rigs, and great crews to support the bands, not to mention being a huge opportunity to reach new potential fans and hopefully to win over a new audience and to make more great friends while you’re at it! It really is THE pinnacle when it comes to the Punk Rock family….
Will you have the chance to catch anyone else whilst you’re there and is there anyone else on the bill you’d recommend people go and see?
We’ll be there all weekend for sure, and trying to take in as many acts as is humanly possible!!!! Obviously it’s a great opportunity to take in some of the big names such as P.I.L, The Men They Couldn’t Hang, Theatre Of Hate and SLF who have been a huge influences on what we do, and it will be impossible not to have a cheeky bit of Macc Lads nostalgia and Dirt Box Disco partying but at the same time we’ll be checking out some new bands, and supporting as many of the bands and acts as possible who have become good friends through this beautiful scene….Steve Ignorant has become a great friend and a pleasure to work with and we’ll surely be there for him, but newer bands such as Terminal Rage, Sons of Clogger, and Wolf Bites Boy will certainly get our support, all doing great things and all good sets of fellas, and The Gakk were great hosts when we recently played Dundalk, Ireland, so we’ll be repaying them by being down at the front for their set, again top fellas!!!
If you could pick one band to appear at the Rebellion Festival who would it be?
Would love to see American band Days N Daze there…we had the pleasure to play a show with them in Nottingham a couple of years back and it was pure beautiful chaos, maybe how it was when the whole punk rock thing initially kicked off all those years ago (we were just too young, honest!, to catch the first wave!). so much energy and passion and massive noise from an acoustic guitar, a trumpet, a washboard, a bath tub bass, and voices….just fantastic punk spirit encapsulated to perfection!!!
Do you have a favourite memory from a previous Rebellion Festival?
Memories in abundance to be honest, but looking out at a packed room when we first played to see so many faces who had been there for us since day one mixed with so many other artists watching us, artists that we looked up to so much too…and to see Attila The Stockbroker singing back every single word to our songs was the icing on the cake!!!
Are you currently on tour if so where else are you playing this year?
We’re always on tour really…constant gigging at venues across the country, festivals, fundraisers, support slots…you name it, and 30 or so gigs to cram in before Christmas comes!!!
What can we look forward to from you in the next twelve months?
The year or so sees us releasing our third studio album (hopefully early Autumn) and with that we’ll be releasing at least two videos to promote the new tunage and maybe a vinyl single or two to go with the main album depending on funds!!!,…..and embarking on a constant crusade to say it like it is!!! Gigs are already stacking up for 2019, with some really good shows planned and hopefully we’ll have some very big news for the early part of 2019…though we do also have some very big news for 2018, so do stay tuned!!!
Do you have any festival survival tips?
There’s no survival tips necessary for Rebellion…just get there for the first note, and don’t leave until the very last note has rang out!!! Enjoy every minute of it, and submerge yourself in the wonderful atmosphere and just live it!!!! Rebellion is not just for August, it is for life!!!!
Is there anything else in Blackpool you’d recommend people experience whilst they’re in the town?
There’s plenty going on in Blackpool for sure…but when you’re there for Rebellion and have well over 300 bands to listen too, on great stages, with great sounds, amongst an army of the finest folks why would you want to be anywhere else….save the other attractions for another time!!!!
Finally when and where are you appearing?
We play The Almost Acoustic Stage on Thursday at 5ish, and then appear on the Pavillion Stage on Friday at 2pm……we’ll be making plenty of noise on both occasions that’s for sure!!!
Thanks for taking the time to speak to us, we’ll see you down the front
