Self Defense Family recently announced their first ever live album, Law of Karma Live: Fake Shit Wins But Not Tonight, that is due out on August 4th via Landland Colportage. The band previously shared the record’s captivating opener, I’m Going Through Some Shit, and today they’ve released their live cover of Neil Young‘s On The Beach.
Like all great live records, Law of Karma Live: Fake Shit Wins But Not Tonight captures a moment in time, offering a glimpse of the unique energy of this nine-piece Self Defense Family lineup at their best. Recorded across three 2019 performances in Brooklyn, Boston, and Philadelphia, then mixed by Jon Markson, the album delves into 11 songs from across their sprawling catalog, along with the cover of On The Beach. Self Defense Family‘s rendition is uneasy yet cathartic, as vocalist Patrick Kindlon (Drug Church) draws out the sorrow and frustration of the original.

“‘On the Beach’ is repetitive and makes the listener feel isolated and atomized. It felt like a natural fit for us.” (Patrick Kindlon)
