This year The Punk Site is doing its annual countdown of our favourite albums and EPs slightly differently. We are going feature all, well almost all, of the album’s nominated by our writers and photographers. Today features the countdown from 40 to 31 with all the handy links you need to check these releases out for yourself. In the coming days we will countdown from 30 – 21 and 20 – 11 with more in-depth features on each of our Top 10, with each of those releases nominated by multiple contributors. So without further ado here’s the first clutch of releases that we think are highlights from 2024.

40. Gen & The DegeneratesAnti-Fun Propaganda (Marshall Records)

“Are you looking for music thats there to challenge, but be easy to listen to, songs that are full of diverse sounds, from electronic dance beats, fuzzy bass lines, drums that switch from funky to punchy, and guitars that sing with anger and sincerity, then you won’t be disappointed.  A debut that stands loud and proud!” (Mark Cartwright)

39. The Bad UpsLife Of Sin (Jump Start Records)

Philadelphia’s The Bad Ups are a four-piece punk band who draw inspiration from the Epitaph Records and Fat Wreck Chords bands of the 90s and early 2000s, while also embracing the rhythms of traditional ska and reggae. Channeling the spirit of Bad Brains, they blend these genres into a unique sound. The band name is taken from the Caribbean patois term “baddup”, which means to treat someone poorly or violently. This name reflects their intense musical style and their ability to connect with the term’s cultural roots.

38. Pizzatramp The Last Supper (TNSrecords)

“This is not an album of subtly expressed observations on modern society. It’s a series of savage jabs to your throat. It took three years to mature, like a volcanic Chicken Madras in a slow cooker and boy, does it have some kick. Short, furious blasts of thrash underscore Jim’s impassioned vocal and nobody is safe. It’s lazy reviewing, but appropriate to let Jim have the last word: “You can expect it to sound just like the last one, but with even more swearing, faster drums and at least one song about frying Nigel Farage’s testicles” (Peter Hough)

37. HauspointsEel Feeling (Cracked Ankles)

Hauspoints are a Lancashire-born avant-pop group who have earned comparisons to Squid and LCD Soundsystem in the short time they’ve been releasing genre-defying tunes. The band’s debut album, Eel Feeling, puts a contemporary spin on alternative pop, complete with trumpets, heavy beats, and “a distinctly northern viewpoint on modernity.”

36. Gevaudan DogsThis Is The Sound Of Gevaudan Dogs (Geordie Records)

“This is an album that explodes out of every corner, it’s never  just gonna be another spot on the playlist, it’s right there at the top of the pile. With songs that live and breathe Rock n Roll, played and sung by some of the best musicians you could ever conjure up.” (Mark Cartwright)

35. Amyl & The SniffersCartoon Darkness (Rough Trade Records)

“Amyl & The Sniffers do live up to the hype, that’s my opinion anyway. We’re able to make our own choices on who we listen to and when we party, but if Amyl & the Sniffers are playing near you then the party is rolling into your town and you really should grab yourself a ticket.” (Mark Cartwright)

34. Pet NeedsIntermittent Fast Living (Xtra Mile Records)

Intermittent Fast Living, the third studio release from Pet Needs in as many years, is an album that’s inspired by the relentless, breathless, stop-start lifestyle the band have found themselves living in recent times. Founded with humble bedroom-band beginnings by brothers Johnny & George Marriott and later joined by Jack and Ryan only a matter of years ago, Pet Needs‘ career has been sky rocketing ever since.

33. Sum 41Heaven :x: Hell (Rise Records)

Heaven :x: Hell is the final album from Sum 41, they bowed out with an ambitious double album that showcases their blend of Pop Punk and Metal. Heaven features ten tracks of the kind of high energy pop punk that threw them into the mainstream almost three decades ago. Its counterpart, Hell, does of course feature an equal number of fist pumping metal anthems. Heaven :x: Hell is the perfect swan song from a band who have been straddling the two genres for their entire career

32. MichaelNite Salad (Cracked Ankles)

Nite Salad is Michael‘s second offering that sounds like it was a painful affair as the band experienced “one studio fire, several collapsed spinal discs, two swapped out axemen and a couple o’ kids, all dragged through a taste-battering pandemic. A seriously good bedrock recipe primed for the unwanted A-road that is Nite Salad.”

31. Gel Persona (Blue Grape Music)

The Persona EP captures Gel evolving and embracing a bold sound without sacrificing even an ounce of the primal energy that makes their music so special, it also proves the band won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Along with producer and engineer Jon Markson the band worked more collaboratively than ever before, tapping into the creative confidence gained through relentless touring to push themselves in new directions.
